2025 BMW M2
Aside from exotics which I did not have chance to drive, one of the best sport cars on the market and still reasonable in terms value per dollar. Now, while pro reviewers are raving about availability of manual transmission and it is indeed a very good one, I'm more happy it has auto for the same price. It's just that I hate fake and IMHO manual with availability of today's auto is a … 'fake'. Sure, it can be quite gratifying to feel you just pulled it off going through tight corner, clenching teeth, popping out eyes, dividing attention between one hand on stick shift, another steering, left foot on clutch, right on gas and figuring out meanwhile the best gear, however for all practical purposes it's meaningless. You can't outdo well tuned 8speed auto, not in agility, accuracy or just pure acceleration (on straight line auto is .2sec faster), not to mention just safety. And if you feel you can, you still have manual clatchless mode controlled by either stick or wheel paddles (in addition to 8 auto driving modes). So wake up, manual aficionados, maybe time to think what the heck do you need clutch for. If you just want to feel a thrill of danger, maybe stick to banji jumping or similar - cheaper, no risk and plenty of meaningless thrill. Ok. Done with that :-). The rest almost all is good and already mentioned in article. Not so good - well, BMW is driving machine company, it's not a software company. Software wise is not the worst I guess but not too good either. The oily fingers touchscreen is NOT a good replacement for regular buttons, not in the car. I don't care much about screen size (if I need to watch a movie,I go home and watch it on my 60in hd). It's fashionable these days and too bad BMW succumbed to fashion instead of keeping it's own line of what's most convenient for driver. Software logic is not very logical - I figured what I need most but it's hard to really understand the full logic of what is where and sicking fingers into screen at 80mil/hr trying to hit right spot even if you know where it is, it's plain dangerous. So infotainment is not what I like about this car (or any in BMW lineup, for the matter). But since we are family of two and so care not much about rear seats, I can't find anything else wrong with this machine.
