2000 Daewoo Lanos
After 20 years, and I finally parted with my beloved 2000 Daewoo Lanos. It was still working great. But it was finally too small for my family and I needed a bigger car. I gave it to a friend and it is still going strong. It has never broken down. Never. Not once in 20 years. Really. And I was HARD on it - I used it to carry heavy sound equipment all the time, and construction supplies. … (The rear seats fold down and the trunk is HUGE.) That said, I drove short distances and it's only at about 120K miles. I performed the recommended engine belt replacement (every 60K miles) and I changed the oil every 8K miles or so when I remembered. I have replaced the usual wear and tear items: like fluids and the battery, and also the alternator and tires occasionally. Air conditioning coolant had to be replaced at year 18. The only things that ever actually went wrong was light inside the trunk went out after about 12 years, and I broke off the exterior lever of the door handle (very simple to replace though). I know Daewoo is out of business and you rarely find Daewoos anymore. But if you see one used, know it is a reliable car. Simple, cheap, but so very reliable. Any Japanese or Korean car repair place will be able to do the routine maintenance. It isn't a complicated car. But when they say they have never worked on a Daewoo before it is because they don't break down. Also a bonus - no one steals them for parts because there is no market for that. Hint: avoid red paint colors when possible because those don't hold up as well as other colors. The only downside.
I have heard rumors that the Chevy Aveo is mostly the same car (they took over Daewoo when it went under). But I have no experience with it. Worth looking at at least.
