2020 FIAT 124 Spider
After looking at the 124 Spider off and on for a year or so, I decided to take a test drive last month. While looking at both the Abarth and Lusso trims that were available at the dealership, I also learned that Fiat was discontinuing the 124 with the 2020 model. What a shame, as this is no doubt a great little car that offers a different twist to its Mazda MX 5 cousin.
After driving … both cars, my wife and I settled on the Lusso model, black exterior with saddle tan interior. We really liked the Abart for the manual transmission, as well as a little more sporty and youthful look. That said, the Lusso just has a more timeless look, in our opinion, and as we will probably never race this car, just felt the Lusso would age better.
Although we’ve only had it a month now, I’m really impressed with the way the car drives and handles. Yes, it’s small inside, but if that’s a concern then one probably shouldn’t be looking at this car to begin with. Everything is laid out very nicely, the interior trim is well appointed, and it’s super easy to lower and raise the top. As we plan on keeping this car for a long time, I anticipate it will bring us a lot of fun as the kids head of to college and we can enjoy some nice drives together. As many have said in other reviews, this car “puts a smile on my face each time I drive it”. I have no doubt it will continue to do so.
The one question I have for the Edmunds reviewers is, why rate this car so low relative to the Mazda MX 5? For sure, the engine is not the same, but essentially everything else in both cars are the same. The interior ergonomics, infotainment and cargo are identical, yet the Fiat scores lower on all these. Even the written description of each of these categories is negative for the Fiat, but positive for the Mazda. This to me is a rather biased review.
