Gentlemans 3.8LX auto after 27 Years!!!

1997 Ford Thunderbird
Just picked this vehicle up about 2 weeks ago now with 114k on it on a straight title trade. It's the "green" that everyone remembers these things by and only a base with the 3.8 in it. With that there were a couple things that needed remedied:
1: MAF sensor was causing a P0172/0175 CEL (rich conditions)
2: Headlight bulbs were garbage
3: General Tune up. Plugs, wires, oil, … filters
Once those things were done along with a good cleaning, Hei Hei (that's what we named it) fired right up and hasn't given us any reason to regret the trade. As I've ridden in/driven a few Thunderbirds (77', 87' turbo, 95' super coupe, 96' LX) I knew exactly what to expect and this didn't disappoint.
Everyone complains about the hard plastics in this generation of T-birds (or cars in general) but the fact is those plastics have held up VERY well through the years and outside of the carpet needing cleaned, the interior is very well kept with little wear/tear on items outside a seam on the center-console. It was built to stand the test of time, allot like my 93' Crown Victoria unlike newer vehicles that can't seem to keep themselves together.
Gas mileage is fairly good for the age, averaging 15-22mpg's based on driving style and city/highway mileage. The ride is AMAZING. The suspension is firm enough to allow some enthusiastic driving but soft enough to soak up bumps without jarring people in the car everywhere, with the independent suspension having allot to do with how the vehicle rides and the RWD having allot to do with the fun factor.
The 3.8 is strong enough to allow decent power and acceleration, though the 4.6 is definitely the better call for everything. The head gaskets on these were known to fail quite easily and it doesn't appear this block has been separated at any time, so I'm going to take it easy and hope it holds up, though I have the knowledge to replace it if/when it happens.
The cabin in comfy for 2, now so much for anyone in the backseat if needed. The stereo is definitely 90's, with no hint of bass able to pass through it without rattling the speakers and a bluetooth radio transmitter is used to help keep this thing current without taking away from the originality of the vehicle.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this car to ANYONE as it's a very good design with a very capable powerplant with parts everywhere that's easy to maintain yourself. Not a fan of all the sensors, bells and whistles on newer vehicles where systems cross over each other and cause chaos in terms of diagnosing/maintaining any vehicle yourself and this will get me by for quite a few years. Good examples of these are slowly disappearing and I'm happy I got the chance to keep this one around as a good example.
