The best car I have ever bought

2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6
I have driven many cars (from rentals to family owned cars), EVS to efficient hybrids and even to high performance cars such as BMW m5s and such. Even with this, I still think that overall, the Ioniq 6 is at the top for one of my favorite cars to drive. Its very good at what it does and its overall intended purpose. Below is a list of the things I have valued most about the car … throughout my ownership and hopefully gives you an overall snapshot of the ioniq 6.
1. Looks
- I am actually not a HUGE fan of the looks of the ioniq 6, and at first, I thought it was ugly. But as I see it more, its really growing on me. Its aerodynamic and looks very sporty and unique, and its a nice change from all the similar looking crossovers.
2. Driving Experience
- This car genuinely surprised me with its driving experience. My family has a 2023 Tesla Model Y dual motor long range awd, and in fact, because of the fun driving experience on the Tesla, I was ready to purchase a model 3 dual motor awd long range. Although that was a great car and I was sold on buying it after the test drive, I saw this green ioniq 6 sitting on the hyundai dealership lot. I decided to test drive it and was super impressed with its smoothness, stability, and premium feel. The tesla (both model 3 and model y) feels like it is constructed out of legos when you drive it over rough roads and bumps, whereas the ioniq 6 is very smooth, refined, and mature feeling. It feels super solid and feels like the car is bolted together very tightly and with parts that feel quality. If I were to close my eyes and not know what I am driving, I would say that this drives like a nice sporty yet luxurious BMW sports sedan like the 3 or 5 series. I feel like every time I drive our family's model y that I am breaking it with each bump and each mile due to the really rough ride quality. Multiple times in our tesla, my dad has told me to pull over to throw up due to carsickness issues. My kitten in fact threw up in the tesla due to the rough ride. But these complains are non-existent with the ioniq. It just glides over bumps and dips. You do feel the road, however, so its not like a Lexus LS or Mercedes S class, but it adds to a nice sporty yet luxurious feel to the drive, and inspires confidence. It genuinely rides like a BMW or Audi for half the price. The ride is also shockingly quiet and is indeed quieter than my friends 2024 BMW X3 with miniscule road and wind noise.
- The handling dynamics are also extremely surprising. This is a very heavy car at 4600+ pounds, yet the car takes corners extremely flat. The steering feels rather natural for an electric power steering system in an electric car, and has a progressive nature. Most mainstream cheaper cars (like rav4, crv, rogue, cars in that class) have artificially tuned steering where it feels super darty initially to deceive people on the test drive that their car is sportier than it really is, and can make for a fatiguing driving experience after a while. The ioniqs steering is not overly sensitive, yet feels sporty. Its very linear in its progression and alongside the preciseness, makes corners and onramps feel like nothing, even if you are taking them significantly above the speed limit. Body lean is present, especially compared to the model 3, but its still very flat and compliant. You can definitely control the ioniq with confidence and ease.
- Acceleration is another thing that surprised me. Having the tesla in the family, prior to buying the ioniq, I thought it was going to be significantly slower than our model y and definitely much much slower feeling than the model 3. Boy was I wrong. This thing is shockingly and aggressively fast from a complete stop, even moreso than the model y which seems to ramp up the power and give you full power around 25 mph. Dare I say the ioniq feels much quicker from a dead stop in city driving speeds as compared to our model Y (not to say the model y is slow, it actually ends up being the quicker car outright). I actually raced my brother from a light while I was in the ioniq pulled ahead of the model y from a dead stop. Just don't try and race a model Y after 40, you will lose for sure. It seriously punches your chest and torso into the seat as you floor it. I have driven a model s plaid as well, and the ioniq, while much much slower, has actual usable power thats fun and quick. There is no need for anything faster in my opinion. The throttle response varies depending on the drive mode you are in. Eco mode is horrible, and you basically have to floor it every time to move with any sort of pace in mind. Normal mode is great and should be used for daily driving. I love the sport mode, however, and keep the car in that mode despite the range penalty. Its super punchy feeling and VERY responsive, sometimes even scary if you forget you're in sport mode. Steering also gets tighter in sport mode.
2. My Drive Mode
- The ioniq 6 has a custom drive mode (press and hold the drive mode button on the steering wheel). This seriously is an amazing feature, and one that I was not expecting to use as much. You can change everything about the powertrain with this. You can change steering firmness and feel, acceleration sensitivity, power output from the motors, and change it from being awd to rwd or a mix between the two depending on accelerator input (auto mode). You can even change the brake pedal feel! Its amazing as if I want to drive eco minded by turning on rwd but have strong throttle response, I have the option to do so (as eco mode has really dull and bland throttle response). It really gives the car a personal experience that can suit drivers specific driving styles.
3. Paddle controlled regen braking
- I love how you can control regenerative braking in this thing. Sometimes on long highway drives, I like to turn off the regen so I dont have to have my foot on the accelerator constantly. In city driving, I always turn the regen to level 3 (not ipedal) as its the most efficient, yet I dont have to constantly shift my foot from accelerator to brake. If you want a full one pedal driving experience, you can have that by putting the ioniq into Ipedal mode. The one pedal driving is not as strong as tesla but that can be a good thing as it feels smoother to come to a stop rather than really strong and somewhat sickening in the tesla (i think the regen and ride quality combo in tesla is what gives my passengers and I carsickness, even once you master the pedal).
4. Range
- Range has been overall relatively ok. It seems, however, that the battery is more sensitive to cold temperature operation and faster, more aggressive driving as compared to the tesla. I regularly get 240-250 miles in the cold (temperatures around 30-50 fahrenheit) and 290-300 in warmer temperatures if I am driving civilized and normally (not hypermiling). With aggressive driving, that range will drop to 160-180 in the cold and 250-270 in warmth, and hypermiling can get you around 310-320 (in the warmth). Its extremely variable, especially compared to the tesla, but overall, range is great.
The ioniq has been just full of pleasant suprises. If you can get over the looks or the fact that its a sedan, its an amazing EV and should definitely be on your list for EVs.
