Compact Bomb of an Electric Vehicle

Wow we’ve owned a fair amount of autos, and some of the best were two Audi TT’s and a six-cylinder R32. The Hyundai Kona Ultimate has knocked the R32 off the top of my list, with its combination of luxury features (rain sensing wipers, heated and air conditioned seats, auto headlights and loads of safety extras) and vigorous handling and precision in driving. For a short-wheelbase car, … the ride is remarkably sorted out, thanks to MacPherson struts in front and a sophisticated multi-link independent set-up in the rear. The handling, while not Porsche level, is quite impressive at any speed I’d want to drive at, and the acceleration pushes you back into the seat when you floor it. While noisy at low speeds (with sound system designed to keep pedestrians aware of you at speeds up to about 16 mph) the car is remarkably quiet and composed at highway velocities. Seats are firm but comfortable and should survive break-in and still feel supportive. The adjustable back bolster is one dimensional (in and out, not up and down) but somehow Hyundai has positioned it at a useful height that works for both me and my wife. They’ve left off a few goodies; the outside mirrors do not power-fold, and there is no driver’s seat memory for seat position and outside mirrors. Oh well. Small sacrifice for such a tactile, speedy, well-composed ride. A few notes: as others have stated, this is basically a glorified two seater with enough room for small children and/or a baby seat in back, but it is not a family hauler. A Tesla Model 3 comes in at almost 21 inches longer (! ! !) but the Kona EV makes it easy to park in urban environments (and it fits alongside my Kia Niro Hybrid in a two-car garage. Great for couples and those with young kids. The seats go down with no hassle and give a respectable if not enormous cargo area, more than good enough for most minor hauling. In short, this is way more car than I would have expected for the price, and since Hyundai hasn’t exhausted its quota yet, the full $7,500 fed rebate applies, with many other rebates and freebies in CA (thanks, Sonoma County, for a WiFi-enabled 40A Juice Box for just tax and shipping!) Think of this as the anti-Tesla; small and tight, rather than big and barge-like.
