2001 Isuzu Rodeo
Oh, let me tell yall about Ole Iggy the Isuzu. This has been the only car I have ever owned. I am 33 years old of this year. Bought Iggy as my first car in high school at age 17 for $6,000. Never expected that I would still own it, let alone still use for daily driver over a decade later. It had 190k miles on it and now has over 330k miles. It has not been a smooth or comfortable ride to … get here but dam it, Ole Iggy got me here. Lost many of the creature comforts over the years. AC in 2015, Summers in South Carolina are HOT, Heat in 2019, Not so bad, Fan blower is like a leaf blower, kinda nice to blow semi-cooler air on summer days. Driver side power windows controller had a stroke at some point. Driver button worked fine, Passenger would go down but not up, Rear Driver would go up but not down, and Rear Passenger just plain didn't work. CD player also eat and clogged at some point in mid 2010s, that left me with the radio or silence. Silence is better sometime with the in and out of the FM channels.
Engine: Oh the things I have done to this motor, and it just keeps trucking. I am now a fairly compete mechanic, but I didn't start as one. Forgot to install the left bank spark plugs, drove for a day like that, before going "dam, she is running really rough" and realizing what I had done. Waited till the oil is blacker than the event horizon of a black hole and thicker than a Gorgia Girl to change. Forgot to plug MAFS in once, drove around for a week "thinking to myself, my car really is sluggish" before fixing it. Multiple fires in engine bay from careless use of starter fluid, gas and cigarettes. Idle gears seizing and snapping serpentine belts. Alternators galore from leaking head gaskets. Timing belt slipping due to too much oil from head gasket leak. Radiators and hoses freezing and cracking, antifreeze is 50% Ethylene glycol for a reason kids. It doesn't freeze!! The list goes on but ill spare us the time.
After the slipping timing belt got to a point and the oil leak was to much, but mainly because it was Covid and I couldn't go anywhere anyways, I torn down the top end of the motor in my back yard. Built a little lean to from my back deck to cover the hood and keep the rain off. Took me about 3 months of working on it to complete the rebuild. I did everything out of my backyard, resurfaced the heads by using sandpaper glued to sheet of thick glass. Lapped in new valves, cleaned everything back to shiny, Retiming the motor was critical, so made sure to watch many youtube videos. And after all that, she just cranked right back up like nothing had happened. That was mid covid, so about 4 years ago. You know the one thing I did not do, THE FRONT MAIN SEAL!!!!!, Why you may ask. Well, short answer is it pissed me off at the time and I told myself it would be fine. I WAS WRONG!!
Now here I am, looking for a newer car, sad but also happy. Iggy the Isuzu helped me in more ways than just being a mode of transportation. Iggy spurred my interest in fixing and building machines. Now many years later I build and maintain multimillion dollar semiconductor fabrication equipment.
