2024 Subaru Outback
I bought a 2024 Subaru Outback Onyx XT August of 2023. Had the dealer add an aftermarket hitch (not the Subaru factory since it removes part of the bumper) and a 7 pin brake controller since the Outback only comes with a flat 4 trailer connector. I average about 27mpg in the winter and about 31mpg when the temps are above freezing. I drive about 60% freeway. Was able to tow a small 18 … foot travel trailer about 200 miles with no issues. I did experience a huge drop in mpg with the trailer down to 9mpg and averaging around 12mpg. The trailer weight was about 2900lbs and the hitch weight was about 285lbs. I love the waterproof interior since I have dogs and they get muddy when we go out. The interior just wipes out. Have had cars with leather and sometimes that stains when it gets really wet. I have wireless Apple at play and the 12 inch display does freeze if you try to use it right after you apply power to the car. But I have noticed it only lasts a few seconds. I have seen some OTA software updates that seem to have fixed that issue and added some new buttons to the mail screen. I only have 9k miles of it so far but so far so good. Very happy with the Subaru full time AWD versus most other cars out there are on demand and front wheel biased. You will feel some slippage in other cars before the rear wheels engage but with Subaru you have to try hard to make it slip around in snow or ice. I guess you could turn off traction control if you want to experience sliding in winter driving conditions.
**Update after 25000 miles and 20 months of ownership this vehicle has performed very well. Subaru also did another over the air software update that made the screen more responsive. Yes, when you first start the car and it’s looking to air connect to your phone there is a 2-3 delay seconds where the screen is not responsive. But it gets better with each update and I think it’s about as good as you can get now. I know some people do not like the climate controls built into the monitor but there are trade offs. You can control the climate and heated seats from the voice control on the steering wheel while driving and on the phone app remotely control the climate settings when setting up your remote start profiles. If you had physical buttons this would not be possible. Depends on your choice and personal preferences. Last winter I had the opportunity to drive thru some snow and ice conditions and played with the level 1 xmode. And it was great to see that the xmode really enhances the cars control on slippery conditions. I have been very happy with my experience with this car.
