Great Car So Far, but a Challenging Purchase

2021 Subaru WRX
Purchased a new WRX Limited in August 2021 and am thoroughly enjoying the vehicle. The driving dynamics are very satisfying, though the ride is rough on the bumpy roads where I live. It's quite a throwback to how imported cars drove 30 years ago when compared to modern vehicles, especially SUVs and crossovers.
The poor mileage is also an adjustment, but I was aware about that before I … purchased. I have been averaging between 25-27 mpg per tank and up to 32 mpg on longer highway drives. I am still in the break-in period so I have not been testing performance limits and am taking it easy on the car and driving at variable speeds for at least the first 1,000 miles (now at ~600 miles).
I purchased this car because I wanted a new manual transmission vehicle that was fun to drive before the manual transmission becomes extinct! The WRX has not disappointed. It makes every little trip a joy and has me enjoying driving again.
So far I am only disappointed in the paint on the car. I have several rock chips already that have taken all the paint off and left metal exposed on the hood. I also have some tree sap or other material that seems to have caused the paint on the hot hood (engine heats up and August was a hot month) to turn a white color around it. I have read that Subaru uses weaker paints as an environmental measure (instead of building EVs, I guess?) and they tend to be thin and not as hardy.
The biggest disappointment has been the purchase experience. It seems all the dealers mark up these vehicles because this is the final model year for the current old-school car. I purchased before the new 2022 vehicle became public so there was a lot of panic buying of this model it seems. The dealer added all manner of extra items and when I started haggling the salesperson let on that some of the add-on equipment had not even been installed, so at least I was able to get it down to MSRP. That was hard to swallow, but it seems like a universal experience when I looked at all the dealers around me.
** 1 Year Update **
I have been really enjoying every aspect of this vehicle except the fuel mileage - mainly because gas prices have climbed so high. It is costing much more to drive this vehicle than I anticipated when I bought it. Vehicle is unmodified and now has ~10K miles.
Highs:
- Exceptional handling in daily driving and confidence of AWD
- Practicality of cabin space and cargo area
- Lack of driver-assist technology - no distractions from driving
- Thrum of engine (I'm aware FA20 engine is more "fart can" than Boxer rumble, but still nice to have engine sound as part of the daily drive)
Lows:
- Audio of stock head unit is very poor quality
- Thin paint
