Great Car but lacks some quality/features

2022 Toyota Avalon
I'm overall giving this car a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's not perfect, but it's still a fantastic car. I bought it brand new in January of 2022 and absolutely loved it. It comes with tons of tech in a beautifully styled package. The standard 3.5L V6 has tons of power and is way faster than an Avalon needs to be. Some of my favorite features were the adaptive cruise control with semi … autonomous driving. It was very reliable and will stay in the lane as well as steer with your hands fully off the steering wheel. This system has been greatly improved over previous model years. The upgraded LED headlights in the Limited and Touring trims are super bright and light up the entire roadway. The interior is also very spacious. I'm 6'4" and never found any trouble stretching out or having head room issues, I'm not sure what others were complaining about in their reviews. I was able to load this car up with 4 adults (myself driving) with all of our luggage (with room to spare!) and drove into Death Valley during the hottest time of the year (125 degrees) without any trouble. The AC kept the car nice and cool and got us everywhere we needed to go in comfort. The suspension is great and rides very smooth and controlled with a quiet cabin, The seats are very supportive and comfortable as well. Gas mileage is great on the highway as well. You can easily get 30 MPG while going 75-80 MPH. I just don't like the small 14.5 gallon gas tank.
Here's what I didn't like about it. The overall interior quality was just not that great. The plastic used on the door panels scratches very easily. Just placing a water bottle in the door pocket and brushing it against the panel will scratch it. The dashboard material also scratches very easily, I scratched it numerous times while cleaning with a microfiber cloth and other softer cloth materials as well. This is a common problem across MANY Toyota AND Lexus models and there doesn't seem to be anything to alleviate it. The car comes with an 1100 watt 14 speaker JBL sound system, a big feature that was advertised when this generation of Avalon was introduced. To me, It just doesn't sound that great. And when you turn it up all of the door panels and rear shelf rattle and buzz... A LOT. It's very disappointing to me as I was very much looking forward to this 'high end" set up in this car. The 8 Speed automatic transmission is pretty smooth but it also can do some rough shifts at lower speeds. When stuck in traffic it was constantly hunting for gears. It also was rough going into reverse once in awhile. The transmission was probably the part I disliked the most about this car. Lastly, Toyota took out rain sensing wipers for this generation on all trims. All previous Avalons since 2005 have had this feature and it should've been kept for the final generation. I have a 2007 Avalon Limited as well and it has rain sensing wipers.
Overall, it's a fabulous car and it will be a dream to own for most. But if you are looking for a higher quality, Lexus type experience then I do not recommend this car. The interior is a little too Toyota in terms of materials quality. Since this was the last generation of Avalon I feel that Toyota didn't try as hard. Previous Avalons felt unique and special when compared to the rest of the Toyota lineup. This generation of Avalon feels like a slightly more upscale Camry, but not by much. That's why I will keep my 2007 Avalon until it dies.
I usually keep my cars for a long time but I ended up trading this car in Oct 2023 on a 2021 Toyota Mirai Limted. That car has a high quality Lexus like interior with an amazing sound system and no rattles! I think I would've kept my Avalon longer if I had bought it used for significantly less than what I paid for it new. The quality issues I mentioned was not worth the full price tag in my opinion (And I got $5K off MSRP!)
