Worth the Extra Over a Regular Corolla

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid
TL;DR: I love this car. My friends and family love riding in this car. It has saved me a ton of money. The only major problem is the screen on the dash, and that is a design flaw across their entire product line.
I was driving a 2020 Corolla LE when Hurricane Ida totaled the 2015 Camry my husband drives. I had avoided the Prius for a long time because I didn't believe the fuel savings … paid for the price difference. However, when I saw the hybrid Corolla was only a couple thousand over the non-hybrid, I was sold. I've been driving it for 8 months. Highway and country driving is 60+ mpg, while rush hour New York City traffic is closer to 35+ mpg. With the gas prices as they are now, I'll make back what I paid over the non-hybrid before the first year of owning it. That being said, pros and cons, and I'll speak to the review above.
The reviewer felt it was plain and uncomfortable over a long drive. Yes, it's not fancy inside, but that's not something I feel I need. I don't live in my car (even though sometimes it feels like it) and I find I prefer the clean, simple lines the Corolla offers.I'm usually paying more attention to what's going on around me when I'm driving than the interior beauty of the vehicle. Everyone who has been a passenger has commented that it's comfortable and quiet. It does get loud when the gas engine kicks on, but I feel that's relative to how quiet the battery runs. My 2020 Corolla was louder in the interior than the hybrid is when it's running on gas. I have 10K miles on the car, most of those from going between NY and NC. I haven't found increased time in the driver's seat to be an issue in this car, but I could also say that about the 2019 Corolla LE I drove for 10K miles in 5 weeks last summer. I do a lot of driving, in both my personal car and in rentals, all over the country. It is why I will never buy a Nissan, no matter how low the price. If the rental company tries to give me a Nissan, I will refuse it and insist on something else. Life's too short to drive a Nissan.
Anyway, yes, the acceleration on EV mode is slower than the non-hybrid. I haven't found it to be an issue when entering a highway, which is when I normally need the punch. But, if that's a real issue for you, you can always turn it off. With the button by the shifter. While you're driving. Not a deal breaker, unless you're a spontaneous drag racer, in which case you're probably not reading these reviews. The brakes are touchy, and do take getting used to. There's so much I like about the car, that I'm only going to really talk about the few things that bother me.
The first, and biggest, issue that I have is the info panel. I really, really don't like that it's placed so the top is higher than the dash. This is for all the recent Toyota models. I much prefer the screen to be completely embedded in the front of the dash. I feel it's a visual hazard and a distraction while driving. This, and the motorized driver's seat, are what I miss most on our 2015 Camry. It also means the center front air vents are smaller, and feel less effective. Quite frankly, it's a poor design, and I hope Toyota wises up soon and goes back to the previous dash design.
I also miss having a cigarette lighter under the dash. Not for lighting actual cigarettes, but for charging my phone.while using it for GPS. There is a lighter base for chargers in the console between the front seats, but then I have to wind the charging cord up and over the steering wheel. There's a USB slot under the dash, but when I plug my phone into it, it becomes part of the car, which is not my preference. It might be yours, in which case you'll love it. Speaking of the console between the front seats, I wish I could swing it up. I would also prefer the cup holders in front of the gear shift instead of behind, and I would like a set of cup holders on the rear of that console for the passengers in the back seat. Why have 3 seats when you lose a seat if your passengers need cup holders?
