2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Three sets of observations. First 1,400 miles of city and highway driving has been on my own, a few hundred miles with 2 and 4 people (and one dog). The Highlander replaced a 2012 Outback and the increase in tech these last 10 years is stunning but that is true for any 2022 model. What really impresses is the quiet comfort, almost luxury feel of the XLE and all while getting 42 mpg. Now, … I am trying to maximize my mpg, and watch my driving so the 'EV' light comes on as much as possible. So, that is not going to be a common experience. Second, the next 1,500 miles were 3 adults, two children with car seats and one canine from CT to Chicago. Had a rooftop carrier for much of our stuff. Third row barely usable – check out car seat anchors if you plan to use that third row. The Highlander is great for 4 people, more than that on a trip will simply be a terrible experience. I did not reset MPG for the trip so unsure of that figure. Third, two adults, 3 dogs and a kayak from western CT to western Maine, about 390 miles each way. No hypermiling and got 34.6 MPG, very impressive given hills, AC, etc. With third row folded flat we were able to pack for an 8-day trip for the 2 of us. Would buy again - but if we needed to haul more than 4 people would go to the Sienna.
