I rarely write reviews for anything, but I know what it is like to agonize over big purchases like vehicles. We needed a new larger vehicle because of our growing family. After researching minivans to exhaustion, we settled on the new 2021 sienna. We worked with our local dealer and were able to purchase an XSE FWD at a fair price. We've put over 1000 miles on the van so far and are … averaging around 34 MPG. We do a lot of short trips (taking kids back and forth to their activities, grocery shopping, etc.) and these short trips likely hurt the fuel economy, but still 34 MPG in a vehicle this size is outstanding! We recently took a longer 250 mile trip up north where the van was completely packed with 7 passengers, luggage, and a hitch-mounted bike rack with 3 bikes. I figured we would see a reduction in fuel efficiency, but we actually managed 36 MPG on the way up and 35 MPG on the way back! Note that this is spring/summer driving, so there will be some MPG reduction come fall/winter.
In terms of performance, you will not win any drag races, but it seems plenty quick enough to merge with traffic and pass other cars if needed. It is actually pretty quick off the line as it uses more of the battery from a dead stop. We really like the looks of the XSE. We have 20 inch wheels with sports suspension so it rides a little stiffer, but that also translates into less body roll on windy roads. Overall, it rides really comfortably on the interstate and little bumpier on city streets, but no complaints from the occupants so far. The interior and technology (including all the safety features) is first rate and the learning curve is not very steep. I think I have all the tech figured out after about a month of ownership.
Overall, I cannot imagine a better family vehicle if you also care about fuel efficiency. We only have around 1000 miles on it so far, so time will tell just how good it is, but Toyota has been making hybrids for more than 20 years, so I'm confident in the dependability of this one. I currently have a Camry Hybrid that has been very reliable. I hope to keep this van for the next decade or more!
