2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
I wouldn't listen to many of the "professional" reviews. You really need to decide what your priorities are when you decide to buy a car. I have owned many different cars throughout the years including an Acura MDX and BMW 6 Series Conv. I had been driving a Mazda 6 for the last 5 years. I was looking for another SUV. I drove my MDX for 9 years and put about 170k mi on it with many road … trips with the kids. I loved the size and utility. So, I looked around at what's available today. I considered the 2021 Toyota 4Runner, GMC Yukon AT4, Mazda CX9, Toyota Highlander, Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne Coupe, Volvo XC90, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Acura MDX, and VW Atlas Cross Sport. After researching and reading many reviews my short list was between the 2021 Toyota, GMC, Mazda and possibly the VW. I couldn't justify the size and price of the GMC. So that left me with two reliable Japanese models and the German. Mazda is a great car with many modern safety features (but smaller than other SUVs, less tow capacity and really only for street driving). Toyota is a reliable and durable off-roader (but not updated in 10 years). And the VW is sort of a newcomer with a lot of space, style, and modern safety features (but higher maintenance costs and unk. reliability). Toyota 4Runner was my first choice but I could not get over the missing safety features that I love in my Mazda 6. And, although I like the Mazda CX9, the style is beginning to age and the SUV utility is limited because of the size and capacity. So, I decided to check out the VW Atlas Cross Sport believing that I would continue to drive my Mazda 6 until a new 4Runner was released. The reviews have many negative comments regarding a weak V6, low MPG, hard plastics in the interior and the ride. In my opinion the engine is strong enough. If you plan on drag racing or enjoy getting into road rage incidents then it may not be for you. The MPG is a little low, but this can be mitigated somewhat with driving habits. The current 4Runner has horrible MPG and the Mazda has great MPG but requires premium to get the most HP out of the 4cyl. Pick your poison. The VW has soft materials where you need it, and hard plastics where I prefer it to be durable. I noticed that my daughter's 12 year old VW Jetta still looks new inside, while my 9 year old MDX with soft materials everywhere looked like a 9 year old car. Even my BMW showed its age after 7 years. If my Atlas Cross Sport looks new in 10 years because some panels are plastic then keep it up. The ride of the Atlas is comfortable and the light steering makes it easy to maneuver in situations we are most likely to encounter like freeways and parking lots. I don't plan to do any slalom courses any time soon. The Cross Sport is a particularly handsome car, unlike the bulbous styles coming out recently with other brands. The dimensions make it look deceivingly smaller than it actually is. The size hits a sweet spot that is larger than most midsize SUV's and smaller than large SUV's that are difficult to maneuver in city driving. It also has a wide and cavernous interior. The back seat is limo comfortable. I loved that my MDX was 48" between the wheel wells and the Cross Sport is comparable. The car also has just about every safety feature and integration that most people could want. The screens are adequately large without overwhelming the interior like you're sitting at a desk in Cape Canaveral. There is a great VW app that will tell you if you left a window or sunroof cracked open or if someone breaks in. It has a speed monitor, curfew monitor, and valet monitor. There is also a VW stolen vehicle tracking service built in. The 4Motion is a great system that will cover 95% of how most people use their SUVs. If you want to drive in the dunes or crawl over rocks most people don't use their daily driver. VW also includes 24 mos of routine maintenance that can be extended for a small fee, to alleviate concerns about possible reliability issues. VW has had time to work the bugs out of the Atlas, yet you also get all of the latest safety and convenience features. So, far I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. The Atlas Cross Sport is the German "Swiss Army knife" of SUV's. If you want a handsome SUV with all of the latest safety features, with a lot of utility for a reasonable price, that is still unpretentious, and not afraid of dirt and snow, then consider the VW Atlas Cross Sport.
