2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI
I've read the article and I feel I must add a few things that were either missed or the car wasn't understood by the reviewer, who decided to paint a wrong impression about the car, with no fault of the car.
In the Technology section, the reviewer says the biggest issue is the smartphone connection. Wrong! VW infotainment is at least one generation ahead of the competition offering … wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Seems like someone is too used to the old technology, still offered by other brands this year, and didn't do their homework. Therefore the one USB-C port is not an issue at all for smartphone connectivity, as your phone will automatically connect to the infotainment without absolutely any effort from the user, as soon as you get in the car. Things work as intended, and you won't even need to bother taking your phone out of your pocket or bag.
Fuel economy, again, the numbers are always a bit different, depending on many variables, but mainly the driver. First of all, VW provides the following numbers, which I find very realistic. They are: 28 mpg combined (25.5 city/32.2 highway). In my experience driving the car for over a year now, I can attest to these values, but also wanted to add, that I can easily reach 39 mpg if I don't have traffic to ruin my driving style. This is almost impossible to find on a regular drive nowadays, so, let's stick to the numbers provided by VW, as they are attainable by any driver, under any circumstances. Driving fast and spirited doesn't ruin the mpg's on this car, traffic does. But even in traffic, you are never as uneconomical as 90% of the vehicles around you.
Finally, value for the money. This is a category where one can never be objective enough. Seems like the pricing is completely different by region/country and that makes some reviewers really mess up the comparisons. I live in Canada.
For example, Civic R is the top performance vehicle from Honda, GTI isn't meant to be. Same goes for the price, Civic R is equivalent in pricing with the Golf R and has so much less to offer. The equivalent for the GTI from Honda is the Civic Si. But Si is a lot cheaper, guess why.
I wanted one of the top trim Golf's for the audio system alone, among features that are a deal breaker for me. I don't know any other car that can rival that Fender system at this price point. Honda didn't offer a premium audio system for a long time, not sure what they offer currently, but I can guarantee you it is nowhere near close to the performance VW offers.
There are also a lot of subjectively looked upon features but ultimately comes to personal taste and what's important for oneself. Is good there are different options as we are are all different as well.
For me, there is no doubt, this is the best choice.
