The Volvo EX30 is the luxury automaker's smallest and newest EV. Introduced just last year, the EX30 follows Volvo's iconic square-shouldered Scandinavian design aesthetic, which helps it stand out in a constantly growing segment. Utilizing a battery pack with 64 kWh of usable capacity, the EX30 was initially released only with a dual-motor powertrain. This all-wheel-drive version delivers excellent traction and stability but makes the EX30 more expensive than you might expect for such a small vehicle. We think the 2026 version will introduce a more affordable and efficient single-motor version that could convert more budget-minded EV buyers to the brand. With driving range expected to hover between 250 and 260 miles and a relatively average maximum charging capability of 153 kW, the EX30 won't be the first choice for a long road trip, but it does acquit itself nicely around town, especially if you can charge at home.
Edmunds spotlight: Small but not slow
Usually, truly rapid acceleration is reserved for larger and more expensive EVs, but the EX30 has no problem showing its taillights to some of the quickest sports cars. The dual-motor setup boasts 442 horsepower, which is enough to blast the EX30 in front of icons like the Porsche 911 and the Volkswagen Golf R in the sprint to 60 mph. The single-motor version should come with 268 horsepower and have no problem keeping up with traffic around town or on the highway.
Competitors to consider
Small EVs like the EX30 are generally not offered by traditional luxury automakers, but models like the Mini Countryman SE, Audi Q4 E-tron and Genesis GV60 are the closest currently on offer. All three offer their own unique style and slightly more room than the EX30, but they can be more expensive. If you want to keep it in the Volvo family, however, you can check out the slightly roomier EX40 (the renamed XC40 Recharge) and EC40 (the renamed C40 Recharge, back after a year off the market). Stepping away from a luxury brand, the Hyundai Kona Electric and its twin, the Kia Niro EV, offer tons of features and solid range in a similarly sized package for less than the least expensive EX30.
