While the EX40 name is new to Volvo, the small electric SUV wearing it is not. This is the old XC40 Recharge, rebadged to align with the Swedish automaker's EX-based naming conventions for its electron-powered sport-utes. It lives one rung up the lineup ladder from the smaller EX30 and well below the three-row EX90. Volvo gives the EX40 more than just a new name, though. The Twin Motor versions have a more powerful battery that can recharge faster, and there are minor cosmetic, equipment and materials updates for 2025. The top trim level also gets a new name: Ultra.

Edmunds spotlight: What else changed aside from the EX40's name?

While this electric vehicle's name change is the big news for 2025, the EX40 benefits from more than just a new moniker. The 82-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery Volvo added to last year's XC40 Recharge single-motor model is now standard in the dual-motor all-wheel-drive (Twin Motor) version. That change means the EX40 Twin Motor models are newly compatible with DC fast charging up to 205 kW, shaving six minutes off the wait time to recharge from 10% to 80%. New synthetic leather and textile upholstery choices and a handful of cosmetic and equipment changes are also part of the transition to the EX40 nameplate.

Competitors to consider

Volvo is not alone in the small electric luxury SUV segment. The automaker bases the EX40 on the gasoline-fueled XC40, a strategy Mercedes-Benz employed to create the EQB as an electric version of the gas-only GLB. The Mercedes offers a kid-friendly third-row seat and more cargo space, but it can't match the Volvo's range. Other alternatives include EVs built on dedicated electric-vehicle platforms, such as the more affordable Audi Q4 e-tron, the tech-infused Cadillac Optiq, and the quick-charging Genesis GV60. How does the EX40 drive? We tested the EX40 Twin Motor, which is more powerful than the average compact electric SUV, with 402 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque. At our test track, we recorded a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, which is likely quicker than this SUV needs to be. The 248-hp EX40 Single Motor, which should hit 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, might be a better fit for most drivers.

On the road, the EX40 impressed us with its confident handling and sure-footed braking characteristics, and we like the fact that there aren't any drive modes to switch through — Volvo just sets things up correctly from the get-go. This is an easy EV to drive on the daily.

Comfort

How comfortable is the EX40? The EX40's good handling characteristics come with a trade-off: a relatively firm ride compared to other small EVs. The seats are comfortable, both front and back, though the front chairs don't have many adjustment options.

Dual-zone climate control is standard, but Volvo annoyingly only lets you adjust by increments of 2 degrees, not 1. Finally, because the EX40 is fully electric, there's no engine noise to help mask the wind and road noise, though we still find the Volvo more refined than, say, an Audi Q4 E-tron.

Interior

How’s the interior? The EX40 has enough space to fit four adults comfortably, but if you need to squeeze a fifth person in the back, it'll be tight. Even though it's electric, the EX40 has the transmission tunnel used in its gas-powered counterpart, the XC40, which all but kills legroom for the middle-seat rider.

An updated version of Volvo's Google-backed infotainment system is found on a 9-inch screen in the center of the dashboard, with a simple row of audio controls below. Pretty much all of the vehicle's settings are found within the touchscreen and can be difficult to locate — especially if you need to make an adjustment while driving.

How’s the tech? Volvo's infotainment system is powered by Google, meaning it relies on Google Maps for navigation and natural-speech voice commands are managed by the Google Assistant. It all works super well, though we had occasional issues with response times to inputs. Volvo's infotainment software can be slow to initially boot up too.

Volvo equips the EX40 with lots of standard driver aids, and the systems all work well. Adaptive cruise control keeps a steady distance behind a lead car, and the lane departure and blind-spot warning systems aren't too intrusive in daily driving.

Storage

How’s the storage? The Volvo EX40 has a 20.7 cubic feet of space behind the second row and a maximum cargo capacity of 57.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The SUV's boxy, upright shape lends itself to great hauling abilities, and thankfully Volvo managed to package the EX40's battery below the vehicle's floor, so it doesn't impede on storage space. The EX40 has exactly as much cargo room as the gas-powered XC40, plus a tiny 1-cubic-foot frunk up front.

On the other hand, storage for smaller items is lacking. The center console isn't particularly large and the glovebox is massive. We like the little trash bin opening, though — it's a clever solution for keeping the cabin clean.

Range and Efficiency

How are the range and efficiency? The EX40 Twin Motor now has the larger 82-kilowatt-hour battery from the Single Motor variant and is capable of charging at 205 kilowatts, up from 200 kW. Volvo estimates the EX40 can recharge from 10% to 80% battery charge in a quick as 26 minutes, given optimal charging conditions. The EPA estimates a range of 296 miles for the single-motor EX40 or 260 miles if you opt for the dual-motor, which puts it right in line with other compact SUVs. Is the EX40 a good value? Volvo offers three trim levels on the EX40 — Core, Plus and Ultra — and you can pair these with both the single-motor and dual-motor powertrains. The base EX40 Core comes pretty nicely equipped, and it certainly doesn't look like an entry-level model, with 19-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless phone charging and a full roster of driving aids.

Fully loaded, our EX40 Twin Motor Ultra cost around $62,000, with things like a panoramic sunroof, 20-inch wheels, and heated and cooled seats. The price undercuts similarly equipped versions of the Audi Q4 E-tron and Genesis GV60.

Wildcard

The EX40 is not a sporty SUV, but in Twin Motor guise, it's peppy and responsive, with lots of immediate thrust. It handles well and is easy to maneuver through tight corners. The EX40 isn't the flashiest or most stylish SUV on the road, but its design is clean and has held up relatively well over time. It shares a lot of its interior and exterior design with larger, more expensive Volvos, and this gives it a premium vibe.
