Overview
Last year, Volvo's all-electric lineup grew to include the three-row midsize EX90. It essentially takes on the role as an electric version of Volvo's similarly sized XC90. It's supported by the compact EX40 and smaller EX30, making it Volvo's largest EV. It maintains the company's distinct Scandinavian design and commitment to safety while packing it full of convenience and future-compatible tech features. On a full battery, the EX90 is capable of driving more than 300 miles before you need to stop and charge.
Edmunds spotlight: Technology for the next decade
Not only does the EX90 benefit from an easy-to-use infotainment system and a long list of safety features, but it also has plenty more that you may not know about. Sitting atop the windshield is a lidar scanner (think of it as radar but with invisible light) that scans the road ahead for what Volvo hopes is a future hands-free automated driving system. For now, it enhances frontal collision detection. The EX90 is also capable of charging at Tesla-style fast-charging stations, which should make it easy to get where you're going for many years to come.
Competitors to consider
The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is a great choice for an opulent three-row electric SUV. Alternatively, check out the Rivian R1S if you want something with a more outdoorsy vibe. The Kia EV9 is the most economical choice, and even though it lacks luxury credentials, it competes well above its price range and remains our favorite all-electric SUV overall.
