The 2025 Volvo S60 is a viable alternative to other European luxury sedans. It has a classy-looking interior with very comfortable front seats. The availability of a plug-in hybrid engine is another bonus. It can provide more than 40 miles of all-electric driving. Once the battery is depleted, the gas engine kicks on and it runs as an efficient hybrid with more than 30 mpg combined. Subpar technology features are the biggest thing holding this stylish sedan back.Read full review

Overview
Sedans are not as popular as they once were, but you'd never know it when shopping for a compact luxury car. That's where the understated and underrated Volvo S60 competes against numerous rivals, including those that have defined the class for decades: the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The S60 brings Scandinavian style and sensibility to the segment, coupled with a relatively rare plug-in hybrid powertrain offering plenty of range and performance. In addition, the Volvo is comfortable, safe, and made in the U.S.A. Don't overlook this satisfying Volvo sedan.

Edmunds spotlight: Plug it in, plug it in
Plug-in hybrids give you electric-only driving during the daily grind with the convenience of a gasoline engine for longer commutes and trips. The plug-in hybrid powertrain on the newly renamed S60 T8 (formerly known as the S60 Recharge) equips the car with all-wheel drive and a Volvo-estimated 41 miles of electric range. And when using just the gasoline engine, the plug-in gets about 31 mpg in combined driving. Before you determine it must be a dud to drive, consider it makes a remarkable 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque, which is Dodge Charger 392 Scat Pack territory. And that means this unassuming plug-in hybrid will zoom to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, according to Volvo, though its subdued driving dynamics keep it from being as engaging as German rivals.
Competitors to consider
In addition to the Audi, BMW, and Mercedes named above (our favorites in the class ), we think the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Genesis G70 and Lexus IS are appealing alternatives to the Volvo S60. However, those three rivals feel smaller and less comfortable than the Volvo . In addition, since BMW has dropped the 330e from the 3 Series lineup, the renamed S60 T8 is the most affordable compact luxury car equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.5/10
How does the S60 drive? We tested the S60 T8, which is the plug-in hybrid version. At Edmunds' test track, it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. It doesn't feel like it will run out of steam at any point up to and past highway speeds. The strong electric motor also means that when you're driving it in EV mode (which Volvo calls "Pure"), you don't have to baby the throttle at all. It feels quick and light on just electricity, with enough power to even merge onto the freeway without too much effort.
The brakes are predictable, and the transition between the regenerative braking and physical brakes feels smooth. The S60 T8 also has more handling chops than its tires and styling would suggest.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the S60? Volvo is known for its supremely comfortable seats, and those inside the S60 don't disappoint. The front seats also offer lots of adjustability. We also like the S60's ride — the suspension smooths out bumps and cracks quickly and the S60 remains composed even over undulating surfaces. The cabin is also very quiet, especially when you're using partial or fully electric power.
The climate control system, however, could be easier to use. It requires diving into the confusing touchscreen interface, but once you're there things aren't great. The system needs consistent readjusting to reach your desired temperature and there aren't many fan speed choices, so it feels like you're choosing between on and off without much dexterity.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The S60's confusing mix of hard buttons and screen-scrolling leaves us wanting something more intuitive, and getting a grasp of the steering wheel controls that come without labels can take a while. It's a shame because an excellent range of adjustability in both front seats, coupled with stellar outward visibility, makes the cabin a truly comfortable place.
The S60 has good-size door cutouts that enable passengers to get in and out without too much bending, though the car does sit quite low so taller folks might have to drop down some to get into their seats. Once inside, there is good space all around in the front, but the back seat can get tight for passengers about 6 feet tall and they'll be left wanting for headroom.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? Google is heavily integrated into this Android-based infotainment system, and the native maps application has been replaced with a car version of Google Maps. There's even an app store to download the things you might use regularly on your smartphone. But there is no more Android Auto integration. You only get Apple CarPlay and it has to connect via a USB cable. On the upside, the Google-based voice command system is pretty helpful, though you'll have to log in to it using your Google account. We highly recommend the optional Bowers & Wilkins stereo system and its outstanding concert-hall modes.
The S60's adaptive cruise control works well to keep a set distance from the vehicle ahead. The operation of the lane keeping system, however, can be overly busy. Some of our drivers preferred to leave it off.

Storage
6.5/10
How’s the storage? The S60 T8 suffers in terms of interior storage. The center console only has about an inch's worth of depth. That's enough to lay in a phone or some keys, but that's about all you're going to fit. A couple of cupholders and slim cubbies round out the storage options for the front row. On the upside, the wide trunk is just as big as the non-hybrid S60's. At 11.6 cubic feet, it's adequate for the class, and you can fold the seats down to accommodate longer items.
The roomy back row and highly adjustable front seats make for an accommodating area for bulky child seats. The car is rather low to the ground, which may force you to crouch while you install a seat. But the anchor points and tethers are easy to reach, and there is room to safely secure two seats in the back.

Fuel Economy
9/10
How’s the fuel economy? The S60 plug-in hybrid offers an EPA-estimated 40 miles of all-electric range. After that, it's estimated to get 31 mpg in combined city/highway driving. We drove our test car on our mixed-driving evaluation route with a full battery charge to start to test its electric range. It covered 46.7 miles using electric power, though we should note that it kicked into hybrid mode and activated the gas engine for about a mile with around 5 miles of electric-only range left according to the trip computer. After that, our S60 plug-in hybrid got 36.7 mpg on our test route, which beat the EPA estimate by a good margin.
Value
8/10
Is the S60 a good value? This luxury sedan looks and feels the part. The interior is full of authentic leather and metal, with an airtight cabin that creates a quiet ride. Considering its advanced powertrain, the S60 T8 seems appropriately priced.
Volvo includes an industry-standard four years/50,000 miles for both the basic coverage and powertrain warranty, though several other brands offer more generous packages. The S60 also comes with four years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance and three years/36,000 miles of free maintenance.

Wildcard
9/10
On the outside the S60 T8 is a clean-looking and sophisticated luxury sedan, but it's hiding a secret side that is both efficient and fun. The 455 combined hp from the gas engine and electric motor gives the Volvo plenty of speed, and it has more handling chops that you'd expect as well. And on top of that, you get well over 40 miles of electric range.
Which S60 does Edmunds recommend?
Volvo charges more than seven grand to upgrade to the plug-in hybrid powertrain, but we think the S60 T8's impressive electric-only driving range and added performance are worth the price. That's why we recommend the S60 T8 Plus. Compared to the base Core trim, the Plus features an upscale interior and more standard driver assistance technologies. Worthy upgrades include metallic paint, 19-inch wheels, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

2025 Volvo S60 T8 Plus 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I wanted something understated, luxurious, safe, and comfortable all in one. This car is it, and it comes with epic speed. As a professional, this car is a level of luxury and sport that I am really comfortable being associated with. Nice to know that I can still fly by people on the highway or around town (if needed) with the speed and performance of the T8 trim, but only I need to know … that (well, now you all know too...). From the outside, it screams understated luxury and creates a refined experience and feel that I really like. It doubles as a great car to drive my family around in when needed as well.
The infotainment system is not a problem. It is super intuitive and easy to use when you spend even 5 minutes to get used to it. It is simple, and effortless once you get to know the car.
I have the PHEV - and it is awesome. I never have to worry about not having gas in the morning. I have filled it up like 4 times in a year, and it is always charged fully in the morning even from a regular outlet as long as I plug it in when i get home from work around 7.
You may want to not fill up the gas tank all the way if you are not a regular driver, as the gas could get stale if you are only ever using electric.
Would highly recommend this car to someone looking to dabble in the EV market without fully losing gas driving feel. It is a perfect commuter car for work, with plenty of room for friends, family, and gear.
