The 2025 Volvo S90 is wrapped in a sophisticated and understated design. You wouldn't think that the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid model is powerful and fuel-efficient just by looking at it. But there's more to this luxury sedan, including a spacious and comfortable high-quality cabin and lots of standard advanced safety features.Read full review

The S90 is Volvo's largest sedan positioned above the smaller S60 and is closely related to the V90 Cross Country wagon. Its design hasn't changed much since 2017, but the S90's cool and classy exterior and handsome cabin have aged well and still look sharp yet understated. Volvo has kept the S90's tech and advanced driver aids up-to-date, most of which come standard, though its 9-inch center touchscreen is looking small by today's standards. Unlike some of the S90's rivals, the Volvo isn't a sport sedan, but it exudes other qualities detailed in the Edmunds spotlight below.

The S90 will automatically switch to gas when the electric battery is low.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.

The depicted ranges are based on the estimated new vehicle range value provided by the EPA, rounded down to miles for one-way and miles for round-trip. Actual range will vary depending on the condition of this vehicle’s battery pack, how you drive, driving conditions and other factors.

8 yrs or 100,000 milesHybrid batteries are federally mandated to carry at least 8 years or 100,000 miles of warranty coverage from the manufacturer. Batteries that lose capacity more rapidly than expected should be eligible for replacement under warranty. Coverage of additional hybrid components beyond the battery itself will vary by automaker.

Edmunds spotlight: Unique, comfortable and a plug-in hybrid option
The S90 is a bit of a tweener because it's larger than midsize rivals like the BMW 5 Series but smaller than large luxury sedans like the BMW 7 Series. And because it's priced like a midsize luxury sedan, you get more room (especially rear legroom) for your money. The S90 also leans toward comfort rather than athleticism thanks to its soft ride and very comfortable seats. It's great for folks who don't like stiff rides, but it's still well composed on curvy roads. As for performance models, while the S90 doesn't offer one, the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid gives you plenty of power — 455 horsepower to be exact. That means acceleration is on par with performance rivals without sacrificing comfort. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is unique for the class, delivering a 38-mile electric range on a full charge before switching to the efficiency of a hybrid.
Competitors to consider
As compelling as the Volvo S90 is, it's up against freshly redesigned rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series. They are two of our highest-ranked midsize luxury sedans thanks to their excellent combination of tech, performance, luxury and comfort. The Lexus ES is another very comfortable midsize luxury sedan, and it's more affordable than the S90. The Genesis G80 and Audi A6 are also worthy alternatives. As for the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid, its only rival is the pricier BMW 550e xDrive. Check out our test team's thorough review of the Volvo S90 in the Expert Rating below.

Performance
8/10
How does the S90 drive? We tested the Volvo S90 with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, which Volvo now calls T8 AWD plug-in hybrid. That means there's both a gasoline engine and a battery pack that allows for an estimated 38 miles of all-electric range. Acceleration is quick and relatively smooth, and there's plenty of power for passing on the highway, though it sometimes takes the transmission a second to kick down a gear. It's easy to come to a smooth stop, and the brakes are strong enough to give you confidence in panic situations.
This isn't a sport sedan, but the S90 T8 AWD plug-in hybrid feels composed on winding roads. The steering lacks road feel but is light and direct, which helps make parking a breeze too.
Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the S90? Volvo's seats remain some of the best around. Soft but supportive padding is wrapped in great-feeling leather. There's a good bit of adjustment, and the S90 T8 AWD plug-in hybrid is available with heated and ventilated seats both front and rear. The S90 doesn't have as insulating a ride as insulating as some other luxury cars, but bumps in the road are muted rather than amplified. The climate control system works quickly and quietly.
Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The S90 splits the difference in size between a midsize and a full-size luxury car. There's acres of rear seat room, with plenty of space for passengers well over 6 feet tall to stretch out. Headroom is equally ample, helped by the bucket-style seats. The low seats make getting in and out a bit of a climb, but the large doors mean it's easy to swing your legs in. It's not difficult to find a relaxed, comfortable driving position that places most controls within reach. Visibility is generally good too, though the rear window is a bit narrow.

2025 Volvo S90 Plug-in Hybrid pricing in Bloomfield, NJ
How’s the tech? The S90 T8 AWD plug-in hybrid is loaded with just about all of the tech and driver aids we expect from a modern luxury car. The vertically oriented touchscreen greatly simplifies the control layout since there are hardly any physical buttons. But some commonly used features are buried multiple screens deep. Interface quibbles aside, the S90's Google integration is generally pleasing, including Google Assistant voice controls and an impressive Google Maps display. One high note is the excellent audio system. It's clear and loud, but it doesn't get buzzy or mushy when pushed.
Volvo has always focused on safety, and the S90 comes with a good suite of driver aids such as blind-spot warning and automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. The suite is not as refined as some we've experienced, but it wasn't throwing up any red flags either.
Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The S90 T8 AWD plug-in hybrid might have more passenger space than its rivals, but it falls short when it comes to cargo space. The 13.5-cubic-foot trunk is one of the smallest in the class, but the space itself is wide and low, so you can utilize what's available. The rear seats do fold down in a 60/40 split, which helps open up the rear at the cost of a seat or two. Storage up front isn't great either. The center console is shallow and can't even fit a pair of sunglasses. The door pockets are fine but don't fully make up for the lack of storage elsewhere.
Getting a car seat in and out is a much easier task. You'll have plenty of space to move around while installing or removing a seat. Anchors are easily accessible, and the copious legroom is a boon for rear-facing seats.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The S90 T8 AWD plug-in hybrid is a plug-in hybrid. The EPA estimates that it can drive about 38 miles on on all-electric power before switching over to regular hybrid operation. We've also found that Volvo's plug-in hybrid powertrain is capable of meeting or exceeding the EPA's estimates for fuel economy in real-world driving.
Value
8.5/10
Is the S90 a good value? The S90 T8 AWD plug-in hybrid really shines here. It offers more passenger room, more standard features and far more power than any rival at its price. The gap increases when you stack it up against some plug-in hybrid SUVs. And it's not like Volvo was cutting corners elsewhere. The interior is handsome and clean, with excellent wood and leather trim and interesting touches.
Volvo offers a four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty. Additionally, Volvo includes four years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance and three years/36,000 miles of free maintenance. That's as good as or better than coverage offered on just about every other plug-in hybrid around.
Wildcard
8.5/10
This Swede oozes cool charm. Plus, the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid version has an appealing combo of up to 455 hp and 38 miles of all-electric range. The fact that it's wrapped is such a clean and conservative design makes it a bit of a sleeper. It's not the most engaging or athletic luxury car on the road, but it's far from boring. It stands out without standing out.
Which S90 does Edmunds recommend?
For a relatively small premium, we recommend opting for the Ultra trim to get the full luxury experience. In addition to the Plus' long list of features, the Ultra adds notable features like ventilated front seats with additional adjustments, premium leather upholstery, an upgraded Harman Kardon audio system, and upgraded interior materials like a crystal gear shifter. If you have the budget for it, get the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid for its impressive power and efficiency.
