2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N Review
byKurt Niebuhr
Senior Vehicle Test Editor
Kurt Niebuhr has worked in the automotive industry since 2005. A automotive photographer by trade, Kurt is now one of Edmunds' high-performance test drivers. He's driven and photographed hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicles all over the world, so Kurt's library of automotive experiences would certainly make for a good book. When not dreaming about getting his racing license or trying to buy out-of-date film for his cameras, Kurt can usually be found cursing at his 1966 Mustang.
Pros
- Scintillating performance on both road and track
- Genuinely fun to drive at all speeds
- Long list of standard features
- Comfortable ride despite the performance potential
Cons
- Short range for a modern EV
- An overabundance of drive modes and settings
- Very heavy for a performance vehicle
What's new
- New higher-performance version of the Ioniq 5
- Generates up to 641 horsepower
- Many other performance upgrades, including brakes, suspension and more
- Part of the first Ioniq 5 generation introduced for 2022
Overview
While a handful of automakers have dabbled in ultra high-performance EVs, most are expensive luxury models that are primarily best at straight-line performance. That's not the case with the all-new 2025 Ioniq 5 N. Hyundai's N performance division has turned its racing and tuning experience on the highly regarded Ioniq 5 electric crossover to create a vehicle that's currently unique in the EV space: It's relatively affordable, practical and genuinely fun to drive.

Am I Ready for an EV?
- EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
- If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
- Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.
Edmunds spotlight: The N delivers both performance and comfort
Usually you can't have one without sacrificing the other, but the Ioniq 5 N loses none of the standard Ioniq 5's creature comforts and features in its pursuit of sheer driving enjoyment. The 5 N comes with heated and ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone connectivity, large digital displays, and an impressive list of standard advanced driver aids. There's even a solid audio system and a comfort setting for the suspension that actually delivers. But when you want to get down to some serious driving business, the 5 N is essentially unrivaled in the EV space, especially for the price. It's engaging, nimble, ridiculously quick and robust enough to deliver fun on a racetrack.
Competitors to consider
There's not much in the way of direct competition when it comes to performance-oriented EVs priced under $70,000. The two closest competitors would be the Tesla Model 3 Performance and the BMW i4 M50. While both of these vehicles lack the playful handling and track-capable hardware of the Ioniq 5 N, they counter with more range and a smoother ride quality. For gasoline-powered vehicles, BMW's M2 and Ford's Mustang Dark Horse are similarly priced and are plenty capable of serious performance.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
9.0/10
How does the IONIQ 5 N drive? The Ioniq 5 N and its 601 horsepower (641 hp when you hit the boost button on the steering wheel) certainly does the EV party trick of rapid acceleration. At our test track, it hit 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds and tore through the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at a rapid 122.2 mph. That's quick enough to put it in the realm of the Porsche Taycan GTS and the Lamborghini Urus.
Where the 5 N really shines is in the handling department. Its commendable 1.0 g on the skidpad doesn't tell the whole story because the 5 N is certainly the most fun and playful EV we've ever driven. Despite its nearly 5,000-pound curb weight, the Ioniq changes directions immediately and can be driven cleanly and precisely or with wild aggression. Either way, the results are enjoyable. And while its 110-foot stopping distance from 60 mph isn't quite as impressive, the brakes are certainly up to the task of fade-free performance for enthusiastic driving.
For daily driving, the Ioniq 5 N is as docile as a standard Ioniq 5. The accelerator pedal is smooth and easy to modulate, and its multiple regen settings will appeal to a wide variety of driving preferences. Even the dizzying number of settings can be fun to explore, and you can save, and call up, your favorite configurations with the touch of a button.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the IONIQ 5 N? The Ioniq 5 N rides really well over most surfaces so long as you leave the suspension in Comfort mode. Stiffen up the settings and the ride can be firm and a little busy, but it's nothing you wouldn't accept in a high-performance sport sedan or EV. The stiffest setting is really only good for a racetrack, but the 5 N is capable of being just a comfortable EV when you're not in the mood to hustle.
The sporty front seats are well shaped and supportive without being unduly confining. Power adjustment is not available but the seats are heated and ventilated. The rear seats are far less special and feel flat and stiff by comparison, but they will still hold adults with comfort. When you turn off one of the 5 N's synthetic propulsion noises, the cabin is nearly as quiet as the non-N model. Due to the wider and more aggressive tires, road noise is a bit higher but it's not overly loud. As for the propulsion noises, most of our staff weren't huge fans but didn't mind the synthesized sounds for short periods.

Interior
8.0/10
How’s the interior? The 5 N's interior is very nearly a direct carryover from the standard Ioniq 5. Its dual-screen layout is straightforward in appearance and in operation. It's easy to get the hang of basic operations. What does prove a bit daunting is the sheer number of settings for the multitude of performance options in the 5 N. It will take time to explore and try them all out, but thankfully you can save your favorites in two easily selectable presets. There are so many that some buyers will likely never try them all.
Though the 5 N is all about high performance, there's plenty of space in both rows for adults. The backrest of the rear seats reclines, which, so long as you're not blasting down a canyon road, allows rear passengers to lounge around and chill out in near silence as they're ferried along. The only downside is visibility. The view out of the front is vast, but the thick rear roof pillars create relatively large blind spots. Thankfully there are turn signal-operated side cameras offering a live view, and the surround-view camera system helps out.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? The Ioniq 5 comes well stocked with technology features. Even Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist 2 feature, a combination of enhanced adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance, is standard. The aids work well enough to help reduce driving fatigue and avoid possible collisions, but they don't operate without flaw in all scenarios.
The Ioniq 5 also comes with Hyundai's Bluelink app, which allows owners to control a number of the car's functions. You can turn on the heater or air conditioning before driving, set charge time limits, and see charging stations from the app. There is also the usual wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and the whole infotainment system is zippy and relatively easy to get the hang of by way of the big 12.3-inch touchscreen. As a bonus for a serious performance car, the eight-speaker Bose audio system is pretty solid. We were also satisfied with the 5 N's native navigation should you not want to use your smartphone for that.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Ioniq 5 is not the king of overall storage space. The rear hatch only offers up 26.1 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row. That's pretty big for a small hatchback but smaller than similarly sized EVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y. Those models also offer front trunks too. At least the load floor is low and wide and the rear seats fold flat, which is convenient for loading longer items.
The cabin is full of cubbies and places to stow bottles, wallets and phones. Got small children who need safety seats? We found the car seat anchors to be pretty accessible, and the rear seat recline-and-slide function makes for easy access to the top tether points. The expansive rear legroom ensures that there shouldn't be too much compromise to front seat comfort if you're installing a rear-facing safety seat.

Range and Efficiency
7.5/10
How are the range and efficiency? The EPA estimates the Ioniq 5 N will travel 221 miles on a single charge with a consumption rate of 47 kWh per 100 miles. On our independent Edmunds EV Range Test, it achieved 253 miles with a consumption rate of 35.9 kWh per 100 miles. That's not far off from what we saw in the dual-motor Ioniq 5 (270 miles), showing that the 5 N can be somewhat efficient when you're not carving up a canyon road. And like the regular Ioniq 5, the N is compatible with the latest high-powered DC fast-charging stations, potentially allowing you to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
Value
8.0/10
Is the IONIQ 5 N a good value? When compared to the standard Ioniq 5, the 5 N's sticker price is pretty steep. But compared against internal combustion competitors of a similar price, cars like the BMW M2 and Ford Mustang Dark Horse, the 5 N is quicker and far better equipped. The 5 N exists in a space without any real direct competition, so its value is a bit difficult to define. Still, its excellent build quality and long list of standard features rival EVs costing twice as much.
Hyundai offers excellent coverage with a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain and battery warranty as well as a five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Wildcard
10.0/10
It is not hyperbole to say that the Ioniq 5 N is the most enjoyable performance EV to drive, especially for the price. It's both serious and playful and has enough tricks up its sleeves to keep even the most experienced drivers entertained. On top of all of that, its 1980s retro-futuristic styling easily stands out on the road.
