Overview

The Lexus LC is a stunning grand tourer available as a coupe, convertible and hybrid. As the brand's flagship, the LC leans strongly into the luxury side of the sport/luxury spectrum with a rich interior design, a soft but controlled ride, and a heavily sculpted body. The cabin is a place where everything is nice to touch, though you might feel guilty doing so. Nothing inside the LC feels mass-produced. There's a sense of specialness and attention to detail here that's not present even in most Lexus models. And the only sound allowed to penetrate the interior is the muted wail of the 5.0-liter V8 (unless you opt for the hybrid). Every version of the LC is made for covering miles at high speed in tranquility and comfort. Few cars do it better.

Edmunds spotlight: New infotainment brings a much-needed update

The changes to the Lexus LC for 2024 are minor but meaningful. The biggest change, an updated infotainment system, makes a significant difference in the usability and look of LC's interior. The outgoing trackpad interface felt dated when it debuted about a decade ago and was heavily out of place in the otherwise ultra-modern LC. The new system uses a 12.3-inch touchscreen and shares control logic with other Lexus models. It is also much easier to use and includes a number of new features, such as over-the-air updates, a voice assistant, and additional connectivity options for emergencies and roadside assistance.

Competitors to consider

The truth is the Lexus LC really only has one direct competitor that aligns with its mission, size and cost: the BMW 8 Series. But if you shop beyond the sport-luxury coupe segment cars like the luxury-focused Mercedes-Benz AMG SL convertibles and the more performance-focused Porsche 911 emerge as alternatives. Even the Chevrolet Corvette, which is a capable grand tourer as well, might be considered.

How does the LC drive? We tested an LC 500 with the V8 engine. The V8 sounds great but the competition has moved to turbocharging and more sophisticated transmissions. As a result, the Lexus LC is easily out paced by all of its main rivals. Our test car reached 60 mph in a somewhat languid (for the class) 5.1 seconds. Braking and handling are a similar story. Holding 0.93 g around our skidpad and stopping from 60 in 113 feet are still good numbers, but are simply not good enough against the likes of a BMW M8 or a Porsche 911. The LC's tires don't produce the same grip as tires you can get on those vehicles but the LC is simply tuned more for comfort and eschews any real attempt to be more of a sports car.

There is some playfulness in the LC's chassis but other than the occasional blast out of a corner, the LC is far enjoyable at a more relaxed pace. There's enough torque to deal with the conservative shifts from the transmission and all every gear change was dispatched quietly and smoothly. We'd strongly suggest shifting with the paddles every so often just to let the engine stretch out in order to savor the way it sounds.

Comfort

How comfortable is the LC? The LC's suspension excels at absorbing large bumps and smaller imperfections in the road, even with the big 21-inch wheels (part of our test car's Dynamic Handling package). The suspension insulates the cabin well enough from rough road surfaces without making the car feel disconnected from the pavement. We found the Sport setting to be an excellent balance between comfort and control, with Comfort being a touch too soft for our tastes. Depending on the road surface, we noticed some tire noise and some wind noise at highway speeds. Otherwise, the LC's cabin is quiet and serene and the V8 engine always seems to offer up just the right amount of snarl.

The only flaws we found were in the design of the climate control system and the odd placement of its air vents. While there are some physical buttons for major adjustments, some fine tuning could only be done through the center screen and the infuriating touchpad controller.

How’s the interior? Despite the low ride height and long doors, getting in and out is fairly easy thanks to a seat that's not overly bolstered and just about the right height. The power-adjustable steering wheel offers a good deal of adjustment and moves out of the way when the car's off. The driving position is excellent, with well-placed controls and a good view of the gauges and the road ahead.

The rear window is narrow, but it's no worse than what's in other cars in this class. Some drivers might find the interior to be snug, but the doors are shaped in a way that provides plenty of elbow room. Know that while there are back seats, they're really only suitable to be used as storage.

The LC's awkward controls and onscreen menu layout are the most significant liabilities. It's just generally unintuitive; the controls for the heated seats, for example, are inconveniently hidden in a submenu. The touchpad interface is cumbersome at best.

How’s the tech? The LC's infotainment system has a 12.3-inch screen and generally works well. You can use natural language voice commands and interface with the media, radio, navigation and climate control system.

Lexus includes a decent suite of standard driver aids such as traffic-adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance with lane departure warning. We'd like a higher quality backup camera as well as a surround-view camera system, but the combo of parking sensors with a standard backup camera works decently.

Storage

How’s the storage? The LC 500 has little usable space given its size. There's a woeful lack of small-item storage, not even a decent spot to store your phone for easy access. The 5.4-cubic-foot trunk is larger than a Porsche 911's, but the competitive edge ends there. It's still quite small and shallow, with a high liftover height that makes loading anything more difficult. The back seat is actually the most useful storage space in the vehicle.

The rear seats provide car seat anchor points for child seats, but access is difficult enough already. Fitting a car seat might be possible, but this Lexus is pretty much a two-person-only car.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the LC coupe's fuel economy at 19 mpg combined. That's just about average for V8-powered competitors. Our car managed an impressive 25.8 mpg on our standardized evaluation test route, though conditions with weather and traffic were highly favorable during that drive. In general, we think you'll have little trouble matching the EPA's numbers.

Is the LC a good value? Even though outright performance isn't the major selling point for the LC, there are quite a few other reasons to put one on your short list. There's a long list of standard features and the LC's build quality can still show up its German competition. Interesting shapes and textures abound and just about every surface is covered with leather, and most of the switchgear is metal or feels like metal. Sure, you can find more performance in this segment, but as pure luxury goes, it's hard to find a better deal in this class.

The LC's four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty are just above average for the class. Lexus includes four years of roadside assistance and a year of free maintenance.

Wildcard

If you want the look of a high performance luxury coupe but don't want to be burdened with an overly aggressive engine, brittle ride and all the other compromises than very often come with high performance capabilities, the Lexus LC coupe is a great option. Its low slung, wide, concept car styling set it apart from pretty much everything else on the road and the interior build quality further cements Lexus' reputation of excellence.

The downsides are that the LC will never keep up with your friend's BMW M8 or even a base Porsche 911 no matter how hard you try. But if you treat the LC like the Grand Touring coupe that it is, its comfortable ride, sonorous V8, relatively affordable price tag and guaranteed exclusivity will likely make you forget all about its performance deficit.

Because there are no trims to choose from among the LC models, you might consider the Bespoke Build option, which allows custom combinations of paint colors, interior trim, wheels, and soft-top color on the convertible.

Lexus LC models

The 2024 Lexus LC is offered as a coupe and convertible in a single trim that comes with ample standard equipment. The LC is a 2+2, which means it has rear seats but they are too small for adults. A 471-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 powers both body styles through a 10-speed automatic transmission. A 354-hp hybrid coupe fitted with a 3.5-liter V6 and two electric motors is also available. It uses a continuously variable transmission paired with a four-speed automatic. Together they simulate a 10-speed automatic. All LCs are rear-wheel-drive. Feature highlights include:

This car is perfect in every way. The curves, the sound of the eight cylinder engine Roar, the sleekness, the driveability, the gorgeous details, and to top it off I had a wonderful sales rep by the name of Evans who had an extensive knowledge of this wonderful iconic car.

What is the LC?

The Lexus LC is the brand's flagship grand tourer/sports car, and it's arguably one of the most aesthetically pleasing cars on sale today. Everything about it feels special; even door handles are little works of art. And that's before you even mention the LC 500's sing-song 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8. But nothing is perfect, and the LC's major flaw has been Lexus' truly awful trackpad-style infotainment controller — until now, that is. Lexus has, at long, long last, removed its genuinely awful trackpad infotainment system, leaving us with what might now officially be a perfect grand-touring car. The system is now just a good ol' 12.3-inch touchscreen — the same that you'll find in some of the brand's newer efforts like the RZ or the recently redesigned RX.

To fit the new, blissfully usable screen, Lexus did subtly redesign the dash of the LC 500, LC 500h hybrid and LC 500 convertible. You'll need a side-by-side comparison to notice, and frankly the new setup looks like it could have been that way all along. There are some technical updates within this new screen as well. The Lexus Interface software now has over-the-air update compatibility and a new voice assistant.

Another aspect of the LC that's new for 2024 are the colors. The LC has a fantastic range of standard hues on offer already, with Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 and Copper Crest joining the lineup. On top of this is Lexus' continuing Bespoke Build program. Bespoke Build is Lexus' attempt at fleshing out some customization options for customers' builds, including a wider range of colors and add-ons like different wheels, a carbon-fiber roof, and different colors for the convertible's soft top and interior where applicable.

Mechanically, Lexus hasn't made any real updates. The LC 500h hybrid uses a 354-horsepower V6, with the LC 500 coupe and 'vert still making use of their excellent 471-horsepower V8 engine.
