What is the Corolla Cross?
The Corolla Cross is Toyota's smallest SUV, replacing the CH-R that was discontinued after the 2022 model year. As the name suggests, it's based off the Corolla sedan and uses the same 169-horsepower four-cylinder engine, and as an SUV, it offers more ground clearance and the option of all-wheel drive. Last year brought some notable additions including a new infotainment system and updated advanced safety features, and as a result, we don't expect any notable changes for 2024.
The Corolla Cross uses the same 169-horsepower four-cylinder engine as the Corolla, which is no rocket. Not surprisingly, the larger Corolla Cross is even slower, and an all-wheel-drive model required 9.6 seconds to accelerate to 60 mph in Edmunds' testing. Still, the Corolla Cross is not without appeal, offering a comfortable ride and practicality. But its uninspiring driving dynamics and cramped rear seats keep it running in the middle of the pack in the competitive subcompact SUV class led by the Volkswagen Taos, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Mazda CX-30.
