Pros
- Capable of traveling up to 33 miles on electric power
- Interior feels premium and upscale
- Every model is loaded with convenience and luxury features
- CVT automatic is much smoother than the standard Pacifica's nine-speed automatic
Cons
- Can't fold second-row seats into floor due to hybrid battery pack
- Exhibits some transmission drone noise under hard acceleration
- Fairly high base price, for a minivan
What's new
- No significant changes for 2019
- Part of the first-generation Chrysler Pacifica minivan introduced for 2017
The Chrysler Pacifica has a lot going for it. It has more style than the typical minivan. Its Stow 'n Go seats make for easy transport of large items. The infotainment system is easy to use. There are abundant safety and tech features to choose from. And almost all of this appeal transfers over to the 2019 Pacifica Hybrid.

Sure, the hybrid doesn't get the second-row Stow 'n Go seats (the hybrid battery fits in their storage compartment), but the fixed captain's chairs in their place are actually more comfortable. Plus, that hybrid powertrain significantly improves fuel economy since its plug-in capability allows for about 33 miles of electric range on a full charge. For some drivers, that's enough to avoid using gasoline for weeks or even longer. Once you do run out of electricity, the EPA estimates that it will return 32 mpg combined, which is 10 mpg higher than the standard van.
By some minivan standards, the Pacifica Hybrid also has some drawbacks. The 2019 Honda Odyssey, for example, is better to drive, is more spacious, and has a more versatile seating setup. It's also worth noting that the Pacifica Hybrid is significantly more expensive than the gas-only Pacifica van, especially at base trim levels. There are potential fuel savings and tax rebates to consider, but those aren't realized at the time of purchase.
In the end, if you're looking for a minivan with plug-in power, the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the only option out there. It isn't our favorite van, but it certainly has several virtues that make it worth considering.
Edmunds' Expert Rating
7.9 / 10The 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the only vehicle of its kind — a three-row minivan that's also a plug-in hybrid. It adds exceptional efficiency to an already appealing family-friendly rig. There's a high entry price, but the rewards are great.
Trim tested
Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited (3.6L V6 plug-in hybrid | CVT automatic | FWD).
Scorecard
Overall | 7.9 / 10 |
Driving | 7.0 |
Comfort | 8.0 |
Interior | 8.5 |
Utility | 8.0 |
Technology | 8.5 |
Driving
7.0The Pacifica Hybrid's efficiency comes at the cost of acceleration and handling because the hybrid battery adds a lot of weight. The throttle and transmission response are weird in gasoline mode, but both are golden in electric mode. Plug it in often and you'll like it much more.
Acceleration
7.0The Pacifica Hybrid will easily go with the flow. The electric mode's instant torque gets it moving smartly. But this heavy machine will deplete battery miles quickly if you floor the accelerator with any regularity. The gasoline mode acceleration is unremarkable yet steady. Ours reached 60 mph in 8.8 seconds, which is a below-average time for a minivan.
Braking
7.0The brake response is smooth and predictable, but the pedal motion is longer and squishier than we'd like. At Edmunds' test track, the hybrid executed 60-0 mph panic stops in 129 feet, which is in the expected ballpark for a minivan.
Steering
6.5Its steering feels lighter and less communicative than a regular Pacifica's. Our scales show the hybrid to be carrying an additional 500 pounds of weight, so it's likely that engineers cranked up the assistance to compensate. It, however, maintains good straight-ahead sense when cruising.
Handling
6.0Cornering is where the hybrid's extra mass does it few favors. It feels heavy and less than nimble, and its fuel-saver tires don't offer much grip. The stability it needs to be safe is certainly there, but this one does not like to be hustled even a little bit on a winding road.
Drivability
7.0Driving this hybrid is a Jekyll and Hyde experience. The electric mode comes with zero shifting and utter smoothness. The gasoline mode, on the other hand, consists of a response that rarely feels in sync with your throttle pedal demand because the hybrid system has control of the engine revs and transmission.
Comfort
8.0We prefer the Pacifica Hybrid to the standard Pacifica because its middle-row seats are more comfortable and adjustable (no Stow 'n Go in the hybrid). Its ride is smooth and calm, and the climate control system is roundly competent. Noise is a mixed bag: It's hushed in EV mode and oddly unrefined in gasoline mode.
Seat comfort
8.0The front seats are nicely contoured and remain comfy for long periods. The hybrid's middle-row seats are far superior to those of a regular Pacifica because the battery makes Stow 'n Go impossible. This blessing in disguise allows for better-shaped cushions and the added ability to slide and recline.
Ride comfort
8.0The Pacifica Hybrid rides comfortably over pavement of all sorts, possibly because its 18-inch tires' tall sidewalls help take the edge off modest impacts. Ponderous is too strong a word to describe how the body moves over gentle waves, but it does behave in a manner that's too relaxed.
Noise & vibration
6.5This plug-in hybrid is quiet during the first 30-odd miles of all-electric operation, but it can get quite noisy when the gas engine is running. The CVT automatic nature of the transmission makes the engine rev higher than you'd expect at times, and there are lots of inexplicable haunted-house noises.
Climate control
8.5The climate can be controlled through straightforward knobs and buttons on the dash, with specialty functions on the touchscreen. Both are relatively easy to use. The A/C does a good job of keeping the entire cabin cool on hot days, and three-zone climate control is standard.
Interior
8.5The Pacifica Hybrid is a pleasant place to sit and let the scenery stream past. It's easy to get in and out and settle in comfortably behind the wheel. Once underway, you'll enjoy a spacious, relaxing environment with a good view of the world outside.
Ease of use
8.5We found the Pacifica Hybrid's controls to be logically arranged and easy to figure out at a glance. It's all nicely sized and within easy reach of the driver. The 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen system has large virtual buttons, and the menu structure is easy to wade through and figure out.
Getting in/getting out
8.5The front seats are high-ish (as many drivers in this segment prefer), but the low sill and high ceiling aid access. The sliding rear passenger doors provide generous openings. A gap between the captain's chairs allows third-row access, and the hybrid's improved middle seats also slide and tip forward.
Driving position
8.0Find the perfect driving position with the highly adjustable driver's seat and tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. All the controls are easily accessible from the pilot's perch, too. But the upright posture is perhaps a bit more truckish than in some competing minivans such as the Honda Odyssey.
Roominess
8.5There's ample legroom up front, and the cabin feels sufficiently airy. Move to the second-row buckets and it's much the same thing, thanks in part to the fore-aft and rake adjustments that are exclusive to the hybrid version. The third row feels small and more kid-oriented than some competitors.
Visibility
9.0Most drivers will have no trouble seeing out because of the abundant glass, low beltline, slender roof pillars and big mirrors. Blind-spot monitoring comes standard, and the rearview camera fills in the gaps when backing up. A 360-degree camera is an optional upgrade.
Quality
7.5The Pacifica's interior looks good in photographs, but it's a bit less impressive when you see and touch it in person. The seats are nice, and the door panel armrests are soft. But some of the plastics look unconvincing, and the stitching isn't aligned as well as it could be.
Utility
8.0We prefer the everyday comfort and car-seat friendliness of the hybrid's middle row over the Stow 'n Go's ability to make the seats disappear. Besides, aside from the loss of this ultimate cargo (and car-camping) mode, the total capacity is the same here. As for cubbies, this van has you covered.
Small-item storage
9.0The center console storage is adequate for large water bottles and a few snacks. The cabin has a lot of small pockets everywhere. Cupholders, cubbies and magazine slots are all present. Got a million little things? They'll all fit here.
Cargo space
7.5The hybrid lacks the Stow 'n Go middle seats that fold into the floor, but how often is that really necessary? Instead, you get more comfortable second-row seats every single day. It still has the same capacity as other Pacificas, which is to say strong but fractionally less than some competitors.
Child safety seat accommodation
8.0The second and third rows each have two sets of LATCH anchors, and they are easier to access than those in a standard Pacifica. The hybrid's sliding middle seats provide added room for bulky rear-facing seats, too. And of course, power-sliding doors allow kids and adults easy access with no door dings!
Towing
7.0The hybrid is not recommended for towing. We do not necessarily consider this to be a drawback for a model that is meant to be electrically driven much of the time and be highly efficient on gasoline at other times. The non-hybrid Pacifica can tow 3,600 pounds.
Technology
8.5Uconnect is one of the strongest audio and navigation systems out there because it excels at ease of use, features and smartphone integration. The Pacifica Hybrid can also be fitted with a very effective suite of driver assistance systems, but we wish that some of its components were standard.
Audio & navigation
9.0The 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen is the best system in its class thanks to crisp graphics, ready response and an abundance of features. The Limited comes standard with navigation and a 13-speaker AM/FM/XM/HD stereo. A 20-speaker system with rear screens, HDMI inputs and a Blu-ray player is optional.
Smartphone integration
9.0Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, and there are USB ports (and USB-C) front and rear. Bluetooth streaming phone and audio are here, of course, but the optional seatback video system can also stream video from Android devices.
Driver aids
8.0The Limited has a standard rear camera, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alerts and rear parking sensors that can snub the brakes if you get too close. An optional package adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and a parallel/perpendicular parking assist system.
Voice control
8.0The Pacifica comes standard with voice controls for audio, phone calls and voice text reply. The available 8.4-inch system adds Siri Eyes Free, which takes commands to play music, set reminders and access navigation.
Which Pacifica Hybrid does Edmunds recommend?
The most appealing Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the Limited trim level. It is the most expensive version of the plug-in seven-seater, but it also has a serious suite of gear. On top of all the base equipment, you get adaptive cruise control, heated and ventilated front seats, and USB ports in both rear rows. What's more, the Pacifica Hybrid Limited is the only trim level where you can get the optional Advanced SafetyTec Group that includes a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, lane departure mitigation, parallel and perpendicular parking assist, and forward parking sensors. It packs a lot of feature content in, even if it is a bit pricey.

2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid models
The 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a three-row minivan that seats seven passengers. It's available in three well-equipped trim levels: Touring Plus, Touring L and Limited.
Every Pacifica Hybrid has a 3.6-liter V6 engine augmented with two electric motors (260 horsepower total). It can travel about 33 miles on electric power alone. After that, the V6 and normal hybrid operation take over. A 240-volt power supply can fully recharge the 16-kWh battery pack in about two hours.
Standard exterior features on the Touring Plus include 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, foglights, power-sliding doors, heated mirrors and keyless entry and ignition. Inside, you'll find an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat (with four-way power lumbar), a driver information display, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, tri-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, cloth upholstery, second-row power windows and a 60/40-split folding third-row seat.
Technology features include an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, voice commands, and a six-speaker audio system with HD and satellite radio, a USB port and an auxiliary jack. Standard driver aids include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Cold Weather Group adds heated front seats and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel. A power liftgate is available as a stand-alone option.
The Touring L adds the power liftgate, roof rails, remote ignition, an upgraded center console, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, the Cold Weather Group, leather upholstery, and second- and third-row window shades. The Premium Audio Group adds an eight-way power passenger seat, second- and third-row USB ports, active noise control and a 13-speaker Alpine sound system.
Both Touring models can be ordered with a navigation system, which also adds 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity, and a rear-seat entertainment system that includes a DVD player and a single overhead display screen.
Upgrades to the top-level Limited are numerous. On the outside, the Limited adds automatic high-beam control, power-folding mirrors (with driver-side auto-dimming), automatic wipers, chrome trim, and hands-free operation for the sliding doors and liftgate. Inside, you'll find adaptive cruise control, upgraded leather, an upgraded steering wheel, driver-seat memory settings, ventilated front seats, the navigation system, and the Premium Audio Group contents. A 20-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available for the Limited as well.
Optional on the Limited is the Uconnect Theater w/ Streaming package that includes a Blu-ray player, two seatback video screens, a household-style power outlet, wireless headphones and wireless streaming from connected Android devices. The Limited's optional Advanced SafetyTec Group adds front parking sensors, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, parallel and perpendicular parking assist, and a 360-degree parking camera. A panoramic sunroof and 18-inch wheels are also optional.
Standard on the Limited and optional on the other models is a secondary driver key that Chrysler calls KeySense. Intended for younger drivers and valets, this key starts the car in a mode that limits top speed and volume, keeps all driver aids activated and restricts user-defined satellite radio channels.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
This car is a parent's dream. It is stylish, comfortable, easy to fit 4 kids, has an amazing sunroof, handsfree sliding doors, great cargo space, beautiful seats, fuel efficient, and easy and pleasant to drive. The electronic Uconnect system is awesome... when it is working. My car is just a few months old and the Electronic screen is "glitchy". It freezes, leaving me with a crying … toddler, that his "show is not working." Chrysler put out a system update, but no change for us. The dealer is stumped. I love this car, but am beginning to regret the purchase. Don't you buy a new car so that you can avoid the service department? Sooo inconvenient.
Update 3/2020
We have had the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid for about 2.5 yrs now. I L.O.V.E this vehicle. The UConnect issue is now fixed, no thanks to the dealer. Chrysler automatically updates the software somehow and it is now working correctly. Occasionally it will glitch, but then I just turn it off and turn it back on and it is resolved. We have 3 kids and the automatic doors are fantastic. No pulling on a heavy trunk door, just push a button. Just love all the hands free options. The seats are great and the flexibility of the third row is ideal. I can't remember what interior colors were offered when we built the car, but I would not choose black again for the carpet. It shows too much. I would rather tan or brown. Our seats are a light grey and they don't really show dirt and look great. The navigation system is good, but I usually plug in my phone and use Android auto. etc. I love not having to go to the gas station but once every couple months. We also have a Tesla, which is the bomb... as a mom who occasionally forgets to plug in the car, having the gas tank in the Pacifica as a back up is nice. Once you get the habit down of plugging in, I rarely forget, unless I park in a different spot at the house. I really really like our Pacifica and think it is the best family car.
EVERY DAY IS A THRILL

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Touring L 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
I can almost get by every day with a charge from the level one charger and not use gasoline. I go weeks at a time without stopping for gas and average 75-80 mpg local driving. Using a/c and heat cuts down on the mileage. The electronics makes you aware of maintenance needs and cars performance. The second row of seats pop out and with the third row down i fit 2 twin mattresses and box … springs and frames with room to spare. My only glitch seems to be the control panel screen goes out occasionally and I have not had it back for service yet to get it checked out . Would liked to have had the memory on front seat position. The driver assist features are great. I don't see any significant change in my electric bill.
Better than expected but not perfect

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
I replaced my 2005 Chrysler T&C Limited with a Pacifica Hybrid Limited. With the federal and Colorado tax credits and the mfg. and dealer discounts the car only costs me a total of $310 per month on a 36 month lease. With gas savings its even better. So to be honest the purchase was mostly financial. However the vehicle is much better than I anticipated. The electric only performance is … excellent. The car weighs 600 lbs more than my old T&C but actually feels lighter, more responsive, and quicker. A delight to drive. The car is very quiet but road/tire noise and ride quality are similar to my old T&C (which is good). Wind and engine/transmission noise are non existent. Handling and acceleration are much better. Its impressive that they were able to improve the handling while not degrading the ride quality. A Level 2 charger is a must though (15+ hours vs. 2.5 hours to charge). So you need to install 240 volt service in your garage (added cost). The seats are a little to firm (my 2005 T&C front seats are more comfortable). The lack of Stow-N-Go 2nd row seats is a noticeable loss but an acceptable trade off. The dial shifter is awkward as is the Homelink in the visor (minor issues). The interior is quite luxurious (not a good as a German car but good) The touch screen is very good and the various entertainment and driving aids are excellent. The 33 mile electric range (I've actually gotten better) with a Level 2 charger covers 90% of my driving so its almost as good as a pure electric with the benefit of being able to drive long distances. And it can carry a 4x8 sheet of plywood! The combination of luxury, utility and efficiency(and eco-friendly) can't be matched by any other vehicle. If they fixed the few issues mentioned above and increased the electric range to 50+ miles this vehicle would be perfect.
The van exceeded our expectations

2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
We needed a great deal more room to tote our various bits and pieces of sports equipment - some of it long and heavy. We also wanted to dip our toes in the chargeable car market - but because we often travel off the beaten path we didn’t want to go all electric. The Pacifica Hybrid Limited met all of our needs and then some. It is stylish, beautifully assembled, quiet, easy to drive, … smooth running and technologically advanced! Because we have been able to use public chargers during our last few outings our combined electric/gas mileage is approaching 54! That’s right, 54 mpg! We fully expect, however, when it warms up (and we are using the AC) and are traveling to places without chargers and thus using the gas engine entirely our mileage will fall toward the 30’s. Running hybrid we get about 30-32 mpg. Still pretty amazing for a car this size and weight. There are so many features in this car I cannot list them all here - things like regular cruise control and adaptive cruise control; front seats that bend forward to permit easy access; rain sensing wipers; auto-dimming mirrors; folding mirrors; the amazing Uconnect system, etc!!! We love it and got just what we wanted. And a $7,500.00 tax credit to boot!
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, so we've included reviews for other years of the Pacifica Hybrid since its last redesign.
